How to Install a Wireless Water Tank Level Sensor for Off-Grid Rainwater and Spring Systems

Welcome back to Base Camp WNC!
In this video, we're diving into something incredibly useful for anyone managing a rainwater harvesting system, spring-fed water system, or off-grid water storage setup — a wireless long-range water tank level indicator.
If you've ever wondered how much water you have in your storage tank without climbing up or opening the lid, this solution is for you.

📡 Wireless Water Level Monitoring System Setup
This remote water level sensor setup allows you to monitor your tank’s water level from inside your home or cabin, using a long-range wireless transceiver. Here’s a breakdown of the components and how we installed it:
  • The transmitting sensor unit is powered by four AA batteries (included) and is mounted at the top of the tank.
  • A durable PVC pipe with a weighted concrete base keeps the sensor stable, even when high volumes of water are pumped in — such as when filling with a 4,500-gallon water truck.
  • The sensor works by measuring air pressure in a tube that runs from the bottom of the tank up to the sender. As water rises, it increases pressure in the tube, letting you accurately track how full the tank is.

🛠️ Custom-Built Weighted Tube for Stability
We custom-built a tube to rest firmly at the bottom of the tank, filling the bottom 12 inches with concrete to keep it stable during vigorous fills. A float sensor drops inside the tube, protected from movement and turbulence.

Drilled holes in the tube ensure it fills evenly with water so the pressure sensor works reliably. When the tank is near empty, the weighted pipe still ensures the sensor sits below the water intake line to avoid air suction into the pump — crucial for pump protection and system longevity.

🔧 Installation & Calibration Tips
  • The transmitter is mounted securely on the tank, with tubing snugly connected and properly sealed.
  • Once in place, you’ll need to calibrate the system by entering your tank’s total water volume.
  • While the most technical part is syncing the device to Wi-Fi, once connected, you’ll be able to remotely monitor your water level from anywhere.
This setup is ideal for:
  • Rainwater collection systems
  • Remote off-grid cabins
  • Mountain spring-fed tanks
  • Backup emergency water systems

🌧️ Why This Matters for Off-Grid Living
If you rely on a remote tank for your water supply, knowing the water level at a glance is a game changer. Whether you’re managing a spring overflow, scheduling water delivery, or simply planning your usage, this wireless water tank sensor lets you stay in control — without guessing.
I designed this system specifically for durability, simplicity, and accuracy in off-grid conditions. And if I can get it up and running, trust me—it’s accessible for just about anyone!
