In this blog post we'll be discussing the construction of what could potentially become one of the biggest Springboks ever built. Both myself and Mr Chuck have older models that pull out from hillsides; however, dirt and sediment in our water supply became a problem for us over time. We decided to tackle it head on by installing filters onto our outflow pipes - but even then there were still issues with sedimentation left unresolved. This is why we took things up another notch altogether: building a spring-water filtration system designed specifically around removing these unwanted particles once and for all. The filtration system we've devised involves utilizing two 15 gallon drums. We cut off the top of one drum and placed it upside down on another to create a container for settling water inside. The tube directs incoming liquid towards entering through bottom part where dirt particles sink while leaving behind clean H2O that flows out via overflow pipe into catchment systems with ease! Additionally, filters were added atop this outflow pathway allowing for quick swaps or washes when necessary - making sure only pure drinking quality results are achieved from start till finish! With such an efficient setup in place anyone can rest assured knowing their household has access to safe & healthy hydration options every day! Cleaning your filtration system can be a hassle but not anymore! We've added an ingenious valve at the bottom of each drum that makes it easy to drain out dirty water without any manual intervention. This means no more messy cleanups or potential accidents - just open up the valve and let gravity do all the work for you! To create our filtration system we removed a 10.5 inch section from another barrel and positioned it atop the bottom one. We marked this line using an object measuring five inches tall before sawing along its length precisely. Afterwards we used ratchet straps to hold both sections together tightly while securing them with self tapping metal screws for added stability. This ensures that all water passing through is filtered effectively. With these steps completed successfully, you can rest assured knowing your aquarium's healthy ecosystem will thrive! To ensure a watertight seal we used Lexel, an adhesive that can stick to almost anything. We applied it on the joint between two sections and let it dry completely before filling up our drum with water for testing purposes. Our primary aim was checking if everything worked effectively without any leaks or gaps in the sealing process. To ensure that our system was watertight we used a two inch bail adapter for the inflow side. We also added threaded adapters and female connectors to link up black poly pipes from springs into drums using reducers inside them for controlled flow of water. This attention to detail ensures optimal performance from our setup. To optimize the flow of water and allow for sediment to settle we incorporated a 90 degree pipe with slots at its base. This component sits on top of our drum's bottom surface allowing for proper filtration by preventing clogging from occurring due to excessive amounts of dirt or debris infiltrating into it during usage . With this setup in place users can expect smoother operation when using their equipment while also minimizing maintenance requirements over time as well! The lid of the drum includes a half inch valve that serves as an overflow prevention mechanism. It allows excess water to drain away without causing any spillage or flooding inside the container. We also added a pipe with holes for even distribution of water within it. This feature ensures optimal utilization and conservation of resources while minimizing wastage at all times. The filtration system is designed to collect dirt and sediment from spring water so that cleaner, clearer water can flow into the catchment system. Its easy maintenance makes it a practical solution for dealing with sediment in your water supply. Step 2: Building the Foundation Dig a three and a half-foot square hole and fill it with gravel to create a solid foundation. The gravel acts as a drain field, ensuring the outhouse functions optimally. As a wet pit system, it holds water and allows easy waste breakdown. You can schedule pumping by a professional Portalet company if needed. Step 3: Cost-Effective Door and Ventilation To keep the costs low, we used a ten-dollar door from Habitat for Humanity and added screen wire for insect protection. By placing a rain gutter with a pipe that doubles as a vent pipe, rainwater can pour into the pit, maintaining its moisture. Step 4: Assembling the outhouse Using a post-hole drilling auger, drill holes to make digging easier. Place a solid 55-gallon drum at the base and add a lid with a two-inch diameter hole. A 15-gallon drum is placed on top as a drop tube for the potty chair. Fill the hole with gravel and build the outhouse frame with posts and decking. Step 5: Environmentally-Friendly Operation This closed septic tank system is designed to handle only human waste, making it environmentally friendly. The bacteria in the waste help break down the solids, ensuring minimal maintenance. Pumping the tank may be required occasionally, which can be done by a professional company for a nominal fee. The flow rate alone through the main pipe is an impressive 32 gallons per minute, and when you consider the overflow lines, it adds up to the same volume. We've used an inch and a half paper to hold all the water.
Now, let's take you along for the build! The spring we're working on has a significant flow, which makes it challenging to contain. To tackle this task, we're using Bentonite and hydraulic cement, especially because there are many rocks in the area. Our plan is to build a dam around the spring and create a pipe system to channel the water. The process starts with digging a trench to create a pathway for the water. We make sure to measure the depth carefully to ensure an even flow. Then, we mix Bentonite clay and soil together and spread it around the trench. This creates a barrier to contain the water. We're very meticulous in our approach, making sure there are no high spots or leakages. As we progress with the construction, we encounter challenges due to the high water flow. However, we're determined to overcome these obstacles. We continuously adjust the dam and add additional materials, such as hydraulic cement, to address any issues that arise. Once the dam is nearly complete, we begin connecting the pipe system. We use various fittings and materials, including plastic and black poly pipe, to handle the flow and create overflow channels. After carefully placing and weighing down the pipes with rocks, the water starts flowing smoothly through the system. Towards the end of the project, we add wash gravel to cover the dam and the surrounding area. This serves to protect the system and give it a more natural appearance. The flow rate remains strong, and we're satisfied with the final outcome. In conclusion, the spring job in Western North Carolina presented its challenges, but through careful planning and a combination of materials, we were able to achieve our goal. In an earlier video, I showed you the spring that's producing around 30 gallons per minute. Now, let me show you the box we've built to house our deep well pump and pressure tank.
To begin, we had a man with an excavator dig a hole. To keep the dirt out, we placed a perforated drain tile with a fabric sock over it. Once we're finished, we'll cover it with clean gravel so you won't have to stand in mud when replacing filters. Now let's take a closer look at the box we've constructed. It's designed to protect the system from freezing and other environmental elements. Inside, you can see the pressure tank in the corner. The tank is equipped with a deep well pump and a float valve to keep it full with well water if the spring runs dry. We've connected the water line that goes out to the tiny home site to the electrical conduit that supplies the wire. Another water line comes from down the hill to supply other areas, and we will cut into that line as well. Now, it's time to move on to the next step. We need to cut the pipe down to a certain level without cutting the wires. To protect the wires, we'll slide them through a piece of one-inch pipe before making the cut. This ensures the wires won't be damaged. With the wires protected, we can proceed with cutting the pipe without any issues. Additionally, we've installed a one-inch pull-through which will be used for a UV light if necessary. The other receptacle will provide 110 volts, as all the pipes in the box will have heat tape wrapped around them to prevent freezing during winter. Next, we will wire the pump switch and clean the tank. Once the pump is up and running, we'll finish wiring up the box and have everything ready to go. Now, let me show you how we set the deep well pump in the tank. It needs to be either completely horizontal or completely vertical to avoid damage to the bearings. We'll place the pump inside a four-inch plastic pipe, allowing water to flow across the motor and keep it cool. We've also taken precautions to ensure the wire won't rub against the stainless steel strap. To keep the pump off the tank's bottom, we'll use zip ties to attach it to an eight-inch cement block. This prevents sediment from accumulating and affecting the pump's performance. Once everything is set up, we can lower the pump into the tank and begin working on connecting the pipes. In addition to that, we've installed a filter bag over the inlet to catch sediment and keep the water clean. Lastly, we've constructed a lid for the other end of the tank, completing the system. Since there is no access to well water, we've devised a system to collect rainwater. Join us as we take you through the process.
First, we enlisted the help of Mr. Will, an expert dirt excavator, to dig down and prepare the area. In hindsight, using a mini X would have been more efficient for this task. Nonetheless, we pressed on with the excavation, using tractors and shovels to ensure the area was properly leveled. To achieve this, we added a generous amount of fine rock dust and meticulously checked the level. With the groundwork completed, it was time to set up the rainwater tank. We began by drilling multiple holes in a pipe, ensuring the total area of the holes matched the tank's specifications. Next, we assembled the components, including a steel nipple, adapter, and a 90-degree pipe, which would be attached to the tank's interior fitting. This setup allowed for a six-inch gap between the bottom of the tank and the water intake to prevent the suction of sediment or debris. Carefully positioning the tank, we placed it on a bed of ground-up rock powder for stability. Once in place, we installed the necessary plumbing fittings, such as street L's, valves, and caps, using a union and check valve to ensure smooth water flow. We strategically located the tank near the building to simplify the electric connection for the pump, which would be a 110-volt model from Harbor Freight. Additionally, we planned to include an expansion tank to support efficient hose operation and drip irrigation for the tomato plants in the greenhouse. Having secured the tank, we enclosed it with eight-inch plastic culverts, allowing easy access while protecting it from dirt and debris. The suction line for the pump was outfitted with a valve, union, and a check valve to prevent water backflow. We also labeled the flow direction for future reference. The existing tank already had three holes, one of which we capped off, while another featured a valve for potential rain gutter installation. The remaining hole was designated for the standpipe, which connected to the pump house located at the back corner of the tank. To complete the setup, we connected the pump's outlet to a hose bib, reducing the diameter from one inch to three quarters. This hose would carry the water down to the greenhouse, conveniently drilled with an opening to accommodate the electric line. As the system was only intended for seasonal use, we constructed a simple wooden frame above the pump, prioritizing functionality over freeze-proofing during winter months. To improve aesthetics and protect the tank from UV damage and algae growth, we painted it, matching the farm building's colors. The silver top even mirrored the metal roof. Welcome back to Base Camp WNC! In today's blog post, we will be discussing the installation of a UV water purification light. This UV light is an added precautionary measure for water purification, especially in campgrounds. There are other options available, such as a whole house Dalton Rio ceramic filter or a Berkey filter, both of which can remove 99.99% of bacteria in the water. However, in this case, we will be focusing on the installation of a UV light. Before we begin the installation process, it is important to note that filtering the water before it goes through the UV light is crucial. This helps to remove any sediment or impurities in the water. In this particular setup, a spin-down filter, a five-micron filter, and a 20-micron filter are used to filter the water before it reaches the UV light. To start the installation process, the system needs to be drained. This is necessary because we will be cutting into the pipe and mounting the UV light across it. Installation and Considerations for UV Light in Water Treatment System A 2x4 is mounted across the framework to provide support for the UV light. It is important to note that the in and outflow of the UV light can be pointed up or down, but it is recommended to point them down to prevent freezing during winter or when the system needs to be drained. Once the system is drained and the UV light is mounted, the next step is to cut the lines and start gluing them together. The water will flow from the well, through the spin-down filter, the two filters, and into the UV light. From there, it will flow out and go to the house. Now, let's focus on the UV light itself. It is important to choose the right wattage and gallons per minute (GPM) for your setup. In this case, a 55-watt UV tube is used, which is suitable for a 12 GPM treatment. It is crucial to match the wattage and GPM to ensure effective water purification. To install the UV light, a quartz tube and silicone O-rings are provided. Installation and Maintenance Tips for UV Water Purification Lights The quartz tube is inserted into the UV light, and the other end nut is screwed on to secure it. The silicone ring is then pushed in to create a seal. It is important to handle the UV light with clean cotton gloves to prevent any contamination. Once the UV light is in place, the light bulb is plugged into the socket. It is recommended to use a rubber boot to seal the connection and prevent water and moisture from entering. It is important to note that the UV light bulb needs to be replaced annually for optimal performance. After mounting the UV light and plugging it in, it is crucial to fill it with water before turning it on. The UV light can reach temperatures of up to 140 degrees, so it should be placed away from any flammable materials. And there you have it! Our goal is to revitalize this Spring House by removing the debris, addressing water source issues, and implementing necessary measures for optimal functionality. Identifying Water Source and Implementing Solutions: Upon inspection, we discovered that the original iron pipe was replaced with PVC at some point. To locate the water source accurately, we will clear the area of rocks and debris. Our plan involves setting up a plastic dam using a barrel ring to eliminate surface water and prevent bugs from entering. By resolving these issues, we can ensure a clean and reliable water supply. Spring Box Maintenance: Cleaning and Gravel Covering: While we aim to preserve the existing blocks, cleaning out the muddy areas and the basin may be necessary. This meticulous cleaning process may involve removing sediment from the entire basin and intake pipe. We may consider covering the spring box with gravel to optimize its functionality. This extensive cleaning and gravel covering could explain the size of the original spring box, intended to collect water from various sources. Dam Wall Reinforcement for Surface Water Protection: To safeguard the Spring House against surface water runoff, we have reinforced the dam wall using fabric and plastic. This reinforcement adds strength to the wall while preventing water infiltration. Additionally, we may add more gravel near the dam wall to enhance its effectiveness. Our goal is to ensure that water flows directly from the spring, preventing any contamination. Efficient and Thorough Tank Cleaning and Maintenance: In our commitment to deliver clean and safe water, we embarked on a comprehensive tank cleaning and maintenance project. After emptying the tank using a pump, we removed accumulated sediment with shovels. The entire tank was pressure washed and sanitized to eliminate any impurities. To restore the spring flow, we rinsed the tank with fresh spring water before pumping it back down. Our focus is on providing an efficient and sanitary water storage solution. Efficient Spring Flow Restoration and Pump Installation: We successfully restored the spring flow and installed a deep well pump for a reliable water supply. Anchoring the pump vertically or horizontally, we utilized cement blocks to prevent sediment accumulation. By employing a sturdy steel pipe instead of PVC, we have enhanced the longevity and durability of the system. The newly installed one-inch poly line ensures a consistent water supply from the spring to the tank. New Water and Power Lines Installed for System Upgrades: To upgrade the system further, we installed new water and power lines. The water line was carefully laid from the spring, utilizing a piece of steel pipe to prevent bending and sagging. This new line replaced the old PVC pipe, ensuring a reliable water supply. Simultaneously, the power line was installed to provide efficient and uninterrupted operation for the entire system. Installation of Expansion Tank, Water Filtration, and Winterization: In the utility room, we installed an expansion tank to regulate water pressure effectively. Additionally, a Ruscon spin-down filter was incorporated to remove impurities. We assessed the need for a whole-house filter and addressed winterization requirements by incorporating a valve for draining the system. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive solution while considering the specific needs of the homeowner. Effective Drainage System and Reinforced Cover: To prevent critters and water damage, we created a drainage system around the tank. This involved digging a ditch and backfilling it to deter unwanted creatures. We installed a vault and a drain valve, allowing the homeowner to easily drain the system during winter months. To safeguard the system from debris and potential damage, we used a heavy-duty vinyl liner and secured it with cement blocks.
